The Cooper Project
Created by Marcia Gutierrez
The Cooper Project
The Cooper Project was created in honour of Cooper — our sweet, bright, endlessly loving boy who passed away from sudden chronic kidney failure at only 5 years old.
His illness came without warning. What began as a simple limp turned into weeks of tests, specialists, and searching for answers. By the time the kidney damage was found, it had progressed far beyond what anyone expected. Even the internal medicine team was shocked — Cooper’s kidneys were being harmed by a rare immune-mediated process, a form of kidney disease that can move silently and aggressively.
We learned something heartbreaking but important:
Kidney disease in dogs often hides until it’s too late — but earlier bloodwork can catch many cases before the damage becomes irreversible.
The Cooper Project exists to change that.
Our goals:
• Encourage early screening and owner awareness
• Support research into canine kidney disease, including rare immune-mediated forms
• Fund studies and tools that make earlier detection possible
• Help turn stories like Cooper’s into better outcomes for other dogs
We can’t bring him back — but we can carry his love forward in a way that protects others.
Thank you for being part of his legacy!
